Uni accommodation has stressed me out a lot over the last few days! I really wanted to go self catered cause’ I’m picky with food, probably wouldn’t be up early enough for breakfast most days, and I like to eat what I want when I want as opposed to eating when someone else puts food on the table, but Liverpool have effectively made this impossible for me by scrapping the self catered option in the halls for the upcoming year. Last year there was a self catered option in halls for £95pw which was perfectly fitting and I was going to opt for but nooooo.
If I want to stay in halls then the only option is to go catered for £131pw. Oh… it gets better. The only self catered options they do is in the on campus accommodation, and because it’s on campus and slightly fancier than halls, it’s more expensive, so it works out at £130pw. So you basically pay £131pw and have food included or £130pw to not have food included… makes sense doesn’t it?
I initially opted for the off campus accommodation, regretted it and emailed the uni asking to change to halls - they’ve said they will notify me if this is possible. Tbh I’m not really bothered now either way as the option I would’ve actually liked to have just isn’t available to me anyways.
If I stay on campus I’ll have an ensuite, a nicer view of the city, and less commuting to lectures but I’ll be paying £131 a week just for that and I’ll still have to fork out for food…, if I stay in the halls I’ll have more money cause I won’t need to be doing the weekly supermarket shop, but I’ll have to travel 20 mins each day to and from the city centre. I’d just rather know now rather than later what accommodation I’m going to be offered so I can start making arrangements. I want to get the hefty room deposit paid sooner rather than later, and if I’m staying off campus I’m going to need to buy an Arriva pass for getting into the city centre every day. If I get on campus then I’m going to need to save up a little bit extra just to help me out a bit with living expenses. So really there’s pro’s and con’s for both, for that reason I fully feel like whatever I get I get and I’ll accommodate for. Shit gets real when you actually have to sit down and work out whats going in out and what you’re left with.
How I wish I had a job that could transfer me when I move…
